The Zika virus is here in Southern California. According to the LA County Health Department, at least 13 pregnant women in La County have contracted the disease.
As a precaution, if you have standing water anywhere in your surrounding, get rid of it because these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes including those carrying the Zika virus.
Ways to Avoid the Virus: Use insect repellent and limit your exposed skin.
The virus originated in Brazil and has moved up North from South America, to Florida and is now here in Southern California.
The virus retards the brain development of unborn babies so this is especially dangerous for pregnant Moms.
It spreads by animal or insect bites or stings and by unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex.
As of this writing, there is still no vaccine or specific treatment. For now patients are advised to rest, rehydrate, and use acetaminophen for fever and pain. WARNING: Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen should be avoided.
